Computer Organisation is an
introductory text on computer organization that provides a practical overview
of the subject. It does so by discussing the design of some of the leading
computers available in the market today. The computers taken up in the book
include those from the Motorola 680 X0 and 683XX families, Intel 80 X 86 and
Pentium families, ARM family, Sun Micro systems Sparc family, and DEC (Compaq)
The book is useful for a
first-level course on the subject. It discusses issues such as Basic Structure
of Computers, The Memory System, Input/Output Organization, Basic Processing
Unit, Computer Peripherals, and Pipe lining, among others. It comes with as
many as five appendices, which cover the instruction sets of some of the
computers discussed and other useful references.
About The Author
Carl Hamacher is the co-author
of Computer Organization and Computer Organization and Embedded Systems.
Zvonko Vranesic is Professor
Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto.
He is also a well-known chess player.
He has co-authored books such as
Fundamentals Of Digital Logic With Verilog Design, Digital Design With VHDL,
and Computer Organization And Embedded Systems.
Vranesic was born in 1938 in
Zagreb. He emigrated to Canada when he was young and studied Electrical
Engineering at the University of Toronto. He went on to teach the subject at
the university. He represented Canada in international chess tournaments and
holds the titles of International Master of Chess and International Master of
Safwat Zaky is Professor
Emeritus at the University of Toronto

Organization, he has also co-authored Computer Organization and Embedded
He began teaching at the
University of Toronto in 1973 and went on to hold the chair of Edward S.
Rogers, Sr. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He was also the
founding president of Canadian Heads of Electrical and Computer Engineering and
of the Board of Communications and Information Technology, Ontario.
